Original engleski:
Baetis Rhodani is the first mayfly of the year, in my local stream here in Denmark. The trout in the picture is a 48 cm brown trout, but even clearer in my mind is a 50 cm trout from an earlier season, they sometimes get much bigger during the Danica season, but for an early dry fly fish, this is quite big where I`m fishing. The trout in question was busy inhaling Rhodanis, breaking the surface for every 2 or 3 seconds, I needed 2 casts only, for the fish to take my fly, the fish was quite strong for this early in the year, but in the end it came to my net. It was a lovely early and unusual warm period late in the month of March. The early season hatches takes place in the middle of the day, at least here in Denmark, hatches can be quite powerful and over in just half an hour, so this kind of fishing is in particular a waiting game, like flyfishing often is.
My Rhodani fly is quite simple, but for tying I will say a few words about the hackle that makes the legs. It is made of deer hair spun in a loop made from the tying thread. I cut of a little bundle of der hair and remove the wool hair from it, I do this with a dubbing needle. The deer hair is cut to the desired length, and after that I spin it in the loop of thread. Deer hair is quite slippery to hold and cut in a plastic clamp, and if you think this is too tricky to work with, it is possible to make a clamp yourself, by simply gluing some stripes of foam on the inside of your lamp, this makes a much better grip, I have by the way seen this done by Berry Ord Clarke. When the hackle is turned on the hook, right in front of the wing, there will be far too many legs, and then you simply cut it a bit on top and in the buttom. The very last thing I do, is to squize the legs a bit, to break them a little, this s absolutely not nessacery, but I think it looks better to the human eye, and hopefully to the fish as well. One more thing, just a detail, I take out the feather stem in the cdc wing, to make it ofter and a little better for casting.
